About the Brown Dwarf Compendium

Mission and Intentions

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about the Brown Dwarf Compendium.

The Brown Dwarf Compendium is a multifaceted online venue with the purpose of fostering an international community of people who share an interest in strange and tasteful art. We showcase all kinds of media including audio interviews, music, visual art, literature, sculpture and more.

We provide free profiles/portfolios for artists and venues in order to make promotion easier.

We intend our organization to be a beacon for people who enjoy novel artwork, and we’re developing a more effective networking service including an online classified service. We promote art events for free and we’re always ready to help with organizing art events.

The BDC is a business registered in Ontario, Canada and we are currently working out contracts and making prints for visual artists affiliated with us. We are always on the look out for new places to sell and showcase the artwork on behalf of our affiliates.

We are open to new collaborative projects as well as the development of older ones such as the development of our imaginary world known as Mandragora.

Strangers are encouraged to get involved if they like what they see. Tell us what you think; we’re always open to discussion.

History

On September 15th of 2007, Devin Tanguay shared his concept of an online surrealist literary journal and archive with Christopher Risewick. In the next two days, Christopher designed the website. The first issue was launched September 26th, with Issue #6 marked the magazine's first hiatus period. During this time, Christopher and Devin recouperated their creative energies and began plotting Brown Dwarf's future.

After five months, Volume 2 began as Brown Dwarf Compendium reemerged with a complete visual overhaul and a very early attempt at incorporating other media. With each successive issue we began to take on visual artists from around the world; our focus shifted from literature to incorporating surrealist works from all media.

There was another very short period of rest for the Brown Dwarf Compendium before the site was again redesigned with more interactivity in mind, and we began thinking more about the future of our organization and collaborating with a staff of volunteer editors. Brown Dwarf currently boasts 100+ artists contributing a plethora of exciting media, and we're always seeking more!
